Anna Maria College was looking for a poster design that would represent their school visions:
The College prepares students to adapt to future challenges with creativity and innovation, by integrating a liberal arts education with personal development and professional achievement.’
General education programs play an important leveling function in our society, preparing all students for “civic life and social agency”. Our world needs young adults from across all sectors of society to be engaged in their communities today and to become effective and compassionate citizens and professionals of tomorrow.
The design aspect was to create a poster that focuses on the collage styles that were popular during the turn of the century from the Pictorial Modernist movements all the way through to the Swiss Style/ International Style movement during the 1950's.
Below are a few examples of the Swiss Style by Zeka Design with more of a contemporary feel. They have a softer more dreamy feel. But they retain that geometric grid structure particularly with the dot patterns and geometric shapes.
A current trend in graphic design is a throw back to the International Typographic Style also known as the Swiss Style of the 1950's and the Bauhaus era and Russian Constructivist posters around the turn of the century.
The focus of the ‘Swiss Style’ is on cleanliness and readability. Typical features of the style were asymmetric layouts, use of a sans-serif typefaces and a collage style layout featuring objects of disproportionate sizes and icons.
Swiss Style design utilizes a grid system to layout the elements. These grids are considered to be the “most legible and harmonious means for structuring information.”
